Month Long Retreat

Nov 7th, 3:00 pm to Dec 6th, 11:00 am

Shannon Stein, MSW, in collaboration with the Denman Island Hermitage is offering a rare opportunity for retreatants to evolve their meditation practice with the guidance and support of an adept meditator who is known as a thorough and passionate Dharma teacher.

The focus of this retreat will be using Metta (loving-kindness) as a support to the main practice of Anapanasati, mindfulness of in-out breathing. Anapanasati is said to have been invented by the Buddha to take him to his own full awakening and encompasses the full range of calm-abiding and investigative insight. These two classic Theravadin meditations provide an exceptional and powerful combination for practitioners to examine and skillfully approach Nivarana, the five hindrances; many experienced teachers will agree the successful navigation through the hindrances is an often overlooked and misunderstood necessity for advancement on the path to awakening. The delicate skill of balancing the qualities of energy and tranquility managed through the seven factors of awakening will also form a consistent frame of reference for discussion and teaching.

Meditators will be well-supported with daily individual meditation interviews with the teacher. Interviews will aid in deepening concentration and focus.

Regular group Dharma talks will be offered at the front end of the retreat to situate and establish wise practice. As meditators go deeper with their practices, talks will be tailored for the group with a view to balancing new and helpful directions alongside a sensitive awareness of the need for longer periods of undisturbed concentration.

Each meditator will have a private meditation Kuti, with a heater. A vegetarian chef will provide a wholesome breakfast, hearty lunch and light soup for dinner. The hermitage is a truly ideal setting for expansive and intensive meditation practice, surrounded by beautiful meadows and stands of trees, well laid out for privacy and focus. It is known for its quietude and on this retreat will offer a maximum of ten meditators a unique and embracing experience of nature and ease, away from the busying concerns of the worldly world. The environment will allow meditators to apply their energy solely towards their practice and development on the path to awakening.

Lama Shannon's expertise offers fortunate retreatants in a small group, invaluable skill development which will help not only strengthen their personal practice while on retreat, but also contribute to increased confidence in their practice post-retreat as they continue their development in daily life.

It is Lama Shannon's intention that this longer retreat allow for the conditions necessary to provide access to what Namgyal Rinpoche often referred to as "the depth" from which life-changing and liberating insights can be harvested.

Metta Retreat

Dec 7th, 3:00 pm to Dec 11th, 11:00 am

Taught with compassion and wisdom by Lama Shannon in the beautiful natural surroundings of the Denman Island Hermitage, participants will receive key teachings on Metta, loving kindness meditation, one of the fundamental practices instructed by the Buddha for mental development.

Food will be provided by a vegetarian chef, with a wholesome breakfast, hearty lunch and soup supper. The program will be limited to a small group of ten participants, all of whom will have private sleeping quarters (Kuti) and will receive daily individual interviews to discuss personal practice questions with the teacher. Regular Dharma talks by Lama Shannon, as well as group meditations, will form the core structure of this Metta retreat experience.

Life in modern times is stressful and distracting; North American culture, with a focus on accumulation and the 'cult of the self' does not provide conditions conducive for earnestly taking up practices invented for liberation from repetitive and unproductive habit patterns of thought and action. Metta, with its emphasis on the cultivation of boundless and unconditional loving kindness, places the meditator at the center of mastering the ability for creating wholesome mental states required to progress in Dharma. The serene surroundings of the hermitage will help participants receive their Metta instructions, as they were intended: the 'foundation of the world' essential for peace and inner contentment of ourselves and others.
