The Hermitage will not be hosting residential retreats until further notice. Some of our teachers have generously offered to support our community with online video conference teachings. This model has been quite successful and we will continue to explore it and to update the community as new online courses become available. Please register by completing the online course registration form. Registered participants will be emailed detailed course descriptions and Zoom meeting links. Participants are advised to download the Zoom app at https://zoom.us and to familiarize themselves with the platform beforehand. Please note that registrations will be closed 24 hours in advance of course start times. All start times are Pacific Time.

Fees  All online programs are $10 per day (non-refundable). We realize that this is a very challenging time financially for many and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please email us if your circumstances require a discounted online course fee. Fees go towards covering the centre’s expenses only, not to teachers.

Dana For Teachers  In Buddhist traditions teaching is given freely and dana is an expression of your appreciation. The teachers do not receive any financial support from the Hermitage, so please give as generously as you are able. We request that donations be given by means of e-transfer to email addresses provided by the teachers or through teachers’ PayPal accounts.

Karma, The Womb, And Transcendence

Liberation does not only depend on clearing the events of this lifetime, for those events were in many ways initiated and guided by the experiences we had while in the womb and during the birth process. This retreat will explore the four stages of the womb and their incumbent proclivities, clearing repetitive patterns and unlocking hidden potentials, greatly enhancing our ability to respond the events of our lives with clarity and love.

Anapanasati Sutta Seminar

6pm, Tuesday evenings - The Pali word for meditation on the breath is anapanasati, literally: mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out. This meditation is both one of the simplest meditation practices and one of the most demanding. Although meditation on the breath seems like it should be pretty easy, continued observation of breathing is very subtle and requires active attention. In this eight-week seminar series we will study the Anapanasati Sutta in detail. In addition to study of the text, the course will include an introduction to breathing meditation.

Zen Basics

Zen is described as “A special transmission outside the scriptures, without reliance on words or letters, directly pointing to the mind, seeing into one’s own nature and leading to Buddhahood”. This is the intent, and the essence of practice in Zen; the view within which we surrender the second arrow of our suffering. This retreat offers beginning and long time practitioners an overview of Zen practice, terms used, and significant talk through meditations pointing out the nuances of meditation.
