Dr Sean Pritchard spent many years as a Buddhist monk in the Burmese Mahasi tradition under the guidance of the Venerable Chanmyay Sayadaw (U Janaka), one of the chief disciples of the great Mahasi Sayadaw. He traveled worldwide teaching vipassana and metta practices to practitioners of many different cultures and nationalities. He holds a PhD in clinical psychology and has a counselling practice in Vancouver BC. The practices taught at his retreat will provide a lifetime of tools and techniques to gain insight into the inner world and workings of the mind. Both beginners and seasoned meditators will benefit from the supportive and skillful guidance of this well-experienced teacher.
Sean started meditating at the age of 17, practicing Transcendental Meditation to begin with. He met Venerable Chanmyay Sayadaw U Janaka in 1991 and began intensive vipassana/metta practice with Sayadaw during the 1994 Vassa (rains retreat) at Rangoon, while on a one year sabbatical from work. Sean was drawn to the Buddha's doctrine as a spiritual path because of its profound, yet simple, practicality for everyday life, and to Sayadaw U Janaka as a teacher because of his clarity and deep knowledge of the Pali Canon and meditation. Sean's practice and understanding of the Buddha's teachings grew and improved dramatically under Sayadaw's guidance, and he continued to visit and practice with Sayadaw during subsequent Vassa retreats, culminating in a six-month intensive retreat at Chanmyay Yeiktha Hmawbi (Forest Retreat Centre near Rangoon) from March to August 2001. Sayadaw U Janaka subsequently invited Sean (now U Vansa) to travel with him throughout Asia, North America, and Europe, teaching vipasssana and metta meditation both as an assistant to Sayadaw and as the leader of his own retreats. For a period he was placed in charge of teaching at Dhammodaya Meditation Center (Nakhon Pathom, Thailand).
After returning to N America as a lay person in 2011 Sean undertook a PhD program in clinical psychology.
As a teacher, Sean is committed to convey the simple everyday usefulness of Buddha's teaching while inspiring those around him to explore and experience the Path to Freedom that the Buddha so clearly and elegantly lived.
